This was made for the 2014 D&AD Monotype brief. Brief was to create a typeface that communicated a street newspaper that is a part of INSP (International Network of Street Papers) in order to provide an innovative solution to urban homelessness and unemployment. The design was intended to connect between the hard copy and digital version, keeping in mind the personality of the newspaper and chosen area, out of a selection of over a hundred newspapers around the world.
We've chosen Groundcover news, situated in Ann Arbor, MI. The newspaper appealed to us for the reason it being a bit fun here and there, and needed some help. We've started by making a stencil out of 13 shapes (excluding the dot and comma), we then combined the shapes to create letters and numbers, each shape repeats itself at least twice in the alphabet. After that we've tested the letters out both in pencil- which made us re-evaluate and tweak some of them, and later we tested them as a stencil with black paint. Then the type was digitized keeping in mind the spacing and kerning.
The design we ended up with has its fun unusual parts to lift the newspaper's personality.
